I want to give a basic overview of what composting is and why it’s valuable to compost. Compost is decayed, organic matter that is added to your soil, and which functions as more than just a fertilizer. It is mulch, a soil amender (to break up heavy soils) and conditioner, and will feed the soil so it can provide the best nutrition for your vegetables and flowers.

We live in a state that has cold winters, so composting can be a challenge. I needed a way to collect my organic material and save it until spring. I recently acquired a barrel with a screw on lid that I didn’t know what to do with, but didn’t want to throw away. Someone told me it was an old pickle barrel. It sat around the garage and then on the grounds until I had a brainstorm.

What Can’t You Compost?

It’s amazing what things you can compost but on the flip side there are a few things that it is not a good idea to add to your pile. This isn’t a solid rule as such as some larger piles can handle some of the things we advise against but these are the things we avoid.
